Bamboo napkins: the more sustainable alternative to linen and paper

Bamboo napkinsare made of bamboo fiber, one of the most renewable resources on earth. Therefore, it is not for nothing considered the ecological fabric with the highest sustainability performance. They are a durableam and environmentally friendly alternative to paper and linen napkins because they are made of bamboo fiber. This is a natural, stronger and possibly reusable material and can help reduce waste to lower costs in the long run.

Bamboo versus paper and linen

The bamboo napkins are made of bamboo viscose and cellulose, making them biodegradable and compostable. The napkins are even printed using a solvent-free, water-based ink.

In this way, the negative impact on the environment is a lot less than paper napkins, which are thrown away after use. Compared to linen, bamboo napkins are more sustainable because they do not involve washing and ironing costs. They are therefore a good alternative for hospitality businesses looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, such as hotel Van der Valk.

In addition grows very quickly, requiring no human intervention. Bamboo requires no pesticides or fertilizers for growth, and it does not need to be replanted after harvesting. In fact, after harvesting, new stems grow directly from the roots.

They also use extremely efficient and limited water, making it possible to develop it in inaccessible places and in areas with little to no vegetation. This also makes bamboo a more sustainable resource than many other materials used for napkins, such as cotton, which takes longer to grow and be harvested.

The final advantage of bamboo napkins is that they are hypoallergenic. There is no chance of an allergic reaction when used. This can be especially useful for catering establishments that have (possibly) have guests with allergies.

Bamboo napkins are available in a variety of styles and colors and can be also completely be personalized with printing, which they makes a good alternative for hospitality businesses looking for ways to enhance their image in a sustainable way.

Nameless-1

Van der Valk first in the Netherlands to switch to sustainable bamboo napkins

Van der Valk Hotel Groningen-Hoogkerk was voted the best hotel in the Netherlands in 2019 - just two years after opening in 2017. In addition, the hotel may call itself, as the first in the northern provinces, 100% climate-neutral, due to sustainability in operations and offsetting the remaining CO2 emissions. The latest innovation: 100% biodegradable bamboo napkins.

All activities are included in the footprint, such as purchased electricity, gas consumption, water consumption, waste generation, laundry, F&B, textiles and visitor transportation. Measures have been taken to make operations more sustainable, such as water-saving showerheads, conscious waste separation, energy-efficient lighting, reduction in transportation movements and conscious employees.

New ways to avoid emissions as much as possible are constantly being explored. For example, plastic cups and water bottles have been replaced with cardboard cups and packets from EARTH Water. The hotel has also replaced its linen napkins for 100% biodegradable bamboo napkins.

Van der Valk stands for quality. As much as linen napkins exude quality, they leave something to be desired in two important areas: brand perception and sustainability. Let this be precisely two important focal points of everything we do at The Branding Club.

By substituting linen for printed bamboo napkins, Van der Valk not only wins in terms of sustainability: the napkins - featuring an illustration with the iconic toucan - are more economical, more sustainable and more efficient.
